How Lighting Can Enhance Your Photography!

How Lighting Can Enhance Your Photography!

By Lizanne J Lyngdoh

In photography, there is a variety of ways to maneuver the lighting. Lighting is very important in photography as it plays a great role in producing a successful image. When we think of lighting, our heads immediately turn to the basics – brightness and darkness. However, different things such as mood and tone also work hand in hand with lighting. It determines the quality of the image, the color, as well as the vibrancy and texture of the objects that are being photographed.

Lighting in photography exists in many forms, each producing different results. For example, the lighting which is used to shoot an indoor portrait for a magazine is definitely going to differ from the lighting that is used in outdoor photography. To know which one to use, we must take into consideration, the subject and the concept of the shoot. Naming each and every lighting style would be impossible, on that account, here are a few types of lighting used in the art of photography:

  • Natural lighting – the most basic, the easiest to use, and personally my favorite. Natural lighting ranges from direct sunlight to the tiniest ray of light that can enter a room, even on a cloudy day.
  • Front or Flat lighting – as the name suggests, front lighting is placed in front of the subject. This type of lighting limits the appearance of shadows. It also spreads light evenly across the whole photograph. If the detail is what you are looking for then front lighting is not for you.
  • Soft light – this type of lighting is used when a diffused light source is desired. Soft light reduces hard shadows and creates a beautiful blend between the subject and the shadow. If harsh lines are not your vibe then this lighting is definitely for you.
  • Hard light – contrary to soft light photography, hard lighting points directly to the subject. The intensity of this type of lighting is high, along with the contrast. Spotlights are usually used to get this kind of lighting.
  • Rim light – the lighting for this type is placed behind or above, at an angle. It outlines the subject, hence the name, emphasizing the subject’s shape.
  • Backlight – the knight in shining armor for us silhouettes in sunsets lovers. This type of light is placed behind the subject and works amazingly well for silhouette shots.
  • Split lighting – this type of lighting is used when light hits the subject at a right angle. The result that this type of lighting produces is the subject being divided into 2 parts, one completely lit and the other, completely dim.

As George Eastman once said, “Light makes photography”. It is truly one of the most important elements of photography as it determines the kind of vibe or emotion that you would like to display through your photographs. Learning the many types of lighting is advantageous for it allows your photos to say things which, sometimes, your soul is not able to.
